Wearable Smoke Machine
Prosper Crebillon/The Beast, La Belle et la Bête
A fully remote-operable, actor-safe wearable smoke machine. Researched, developed, prototyped, and built by Ashley Morgan.
This mechanism was developed following the research and conclusions determined by Actor’s Equity Association in 2024 regarding theatrical smoke and haze, and the subsequent effects these chemicals have on actors lungs and vocal cords. Using the research results from AEA’S testing of particulates put off by standardized smoke generation machines, I was able to obtain a handheld generator and smoke fluid that was as safe as currently possible for smoke effects, and used them as the base of the mechanism.
I built the modular carrier harness and neoprene carrier pouch based on a shoulder mic harness, with an added layer of skin-safe insulation sheeting bordering the heat shield to protect the actor in case of a malfunction.
I worked closely with Herí Cruz Jr, the actor playing the Beast and wearing the harness, throughout tech rehearsals to ensure he experienced no adverse effects from the smoke. From his input, I was able to develop a cue list so stage management could operate the machine remotely while Herí was on stage.
