The Bald Soprano

by Eugène Ionesco

Costume Design: Christian Alvarez

Digital Textile Design: Ashley Morgan

When designing Bald Soprano, Christian had a very specific vision for how he wanted the main couples to look; they needed to be in vivid saturated colors and feature an oversized houndstooth pattern. When he couldn’t find existing textiles in the style he needed, he brought me on to the project.

While the plain-colored purchased suits and fabric for the dresses were being finished by the costume shop, I created a repeating houndstooth pattern that could easily be cut on a Cricut Maker 3 machine, and helped cut rolls of 21 foot heat transfer vinyl. When the final garments were fully assembled or modified, I assisted Christian with applying and pattern matching the vinyl on the garments.

As my first experiment with heat transfer vinyl, I used the design process for Airness to prototype and experiment with which fiber and vinyl types worked best with one another, and used said experiments to create a vivid and vibrant world for the air guitar competition circuit.
